KIP KOVAR Herald Journal Sports Editor WACONIA – There’s one thing no team in the Crow River Valley League has been able to do so far this season. That’s slow down the Waconia Lakers. The Co- logne Hollanders finally did that, but it still wasn’t enough to pick up a win as the Lakers used their pitching and defense to lead them to a 3-1 win over the Hollanders May 16. Cologne was held to just five hits in the loss as the Lakers used a trio of pitchers to keep them in check. After Kodey Simon tossed six strong innings to get the win, Ryan Naughton and Peter Brown com- bined for three shutout innings in which they struck out five to keep Waconia unde- feated on the season. Cologne had a chance early in the top of the first to grab the lead. After Tanner Luebke led off the game with a single, an error by the Lakers loaded the bases with two outs. Simon and Waconia worked out of trouble as the Hollanders left the bases loaded to end the inning. After letting a chance to take the lead slip away in the first, Cologne didn’t let that repeat itself in the top of the third. Tim Swanson led off the inning with a single, and it was Joey Lilya helping him- self out on the mound. An RBI single from Lilya gave the Hollanders a 1-0 lead, but it was all Waconia the rest of the way. Thanks to some sloppy defense by Co- logne, Waconia answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead and that’s all they needed to get the win. With the win, Waconia improved to 3- 0 on the season while the Hollanders fell to 1-2 with the loss.
